Cheng Yan is a painter and photographer of international standing based in the UK.
Having studied art and literature in China, his paintings are now in many private and public collections. Taking inspiration from the landscape and nature of his native homeland, his artwork is influenced by traditional Chinese painting and calligraphy, but he has developed his own unique way of expression, in new and contemporary styles.
In his paintings Yan covers a wide range of subject matter including landscapes, animals and flowers - using mainly rice paper, ink, and quality modern watercolours as a medium.
In his photographs he constructs a composition, mood and spirit that relates closely to his paintings.
To find an unusual perspective he will travel for weeks and trek for days up into remote mountains. Many of his photographs mimic the proportions of a scroll through the use of a large-format panoramic camera.
Yan regularly exhibits in London, Oxford, New York, Hong Kong and Dublin, and has recently completed a book on 'Chinese Brush Painting' published by Search Press. His work has also been published in many other countries including China and France, and by Wizard and Genius in Switzerland. He regularly lectures and presents workshops.
The pages on this website catalogue part of Yan's extensive portfolio of prints, photographs and paintings and can all be purchased online.
